Our Work

Bower Place is a Psychology, Psychiatry, Family Therapy, Counselling & Research centre for the development of expertise and knowledge in relation to the management and treatment of child, adolescent, adult & family matters. We are primarily a teaching clinic where our students work directly in the Bower Place Complex Needs Clinic, a service for complex, co-morbid, child, adolescent and adult mental health, disability and child protection matters. Bower Place work therapeutically with clients, many who are disadvantaged, who have grown up with the care system, who are cognitively challenged, or who present with significant cultural, language or religious differentials. In recent years the Complex Needs Clinic has experienced an increase in referrals of refugees and others of diverse language, ethnic and religious backgrounds. We now work in English, Farsi, Dari, Arabic, Dinka and Russian, and soon in Mandarin.

BOWER PLACE METHOD

Since 1986 we have developed the Bower Place Method which draws together theory & practice from a range of sources and incorporates our own original thinking. It is a specialised service delivery and clinical practice protocol & process, developed to address matters where there are co-occurring problems in the context of service delivery systems, including junior and secondary schools (Public, Independent and Catholic), regulatory and funding bodies. Our method was originally informed by our training as family therapists and pays attention to the recursive relationship between the inside and outside world of our clients. While our focus is on family as the context where many difficulties are generated in the past and maintained in the present, we also look to understand and incorporate the wider system and the endemic inequalities due to gender, race, advantage and ability which shape people’s lives and underpin difficulties with which they present.
