Let’s work together for families

On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th October 2019 those of us who work with families will gather in Melbourne for the Pan Pacific Family Therapy Conference: People Across Culture, Time and Sea. While this is always a highlight this year will be particularly special for two inter-related but different reasons. The first is that this is our 40th conference and a time to honour those who worked to establish family therapy as a unique, professional and vibrant practice in this country, to review where we now stand and to plan for our future.

Our second event to mark is the change of membership structure of the Australian Association of Family Therapy to one that embraces all those who work with families. At the 2018 Annual General Meeting of the Association it was voted that new grades of membership would be created that acknowledged and included members who work with families but may not have the wish or need to be full clinical members.

Four grades of membership are now available, Clinical Family Therapist Member, for those who have undertaken specialist accredited training and supervision as a family therapist, Professional Member, a practicing therapist with a degree in Health Science, social Science Education or equivalent, General Member, for those who have some relevant training in the practice of family focussed work and Life members who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian family therapy.

We can now welcome all those who work for families to share our successes, our struggles and to co-create the next generation of new ideas. For more information click on the link to the AAFT website and come and join us.
